iPhone 6: What’s New?
Just like every major launch, the iPhone 6 was causing a lot of stirs in the market even before it was launched. We could find it all over the internet with people speculating crazy specifications. After the device is out, we would say we aren’t disappointed. Just like every time, they have given us something new with the new iPhone. Along with the iPhone 6, they have launched another iPhone called the iPhone 6 Plus. These new smartphones will go on sale in United States on September 19th and will enter the Indian market in the month of October. We see what all new features we will find on these new iPhones.
Apple has gone for a 4.7 inch display this time with the new iPhone 6. The resolution is 1334 x 750 pixels giving you a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. Apple says that there is no point pushing the resolutions needlessly and anything above 300 ppi is reasonably crisp and one can’t notice the difference. We agree with Apple on this. Android device manufacturers keep increasing the display resolutions which also make them more power hungry. The display is an IPS LCD like previous iPhones and we expect the quality to be top notch.
The Apple phablet called the iPhone 6 Plus comes with a 5.5 inch display. Apple has made an attempt to target the people looking for large screen mobile devices. There are a large number of buyers who have been refraining themselves from picking an iPhone due to wide range of display options available on android devices. This would help them target a wider range of audience and lure a lot of customers who would otherwise pick android devices. On paper, the 5.5 inch display on the iPhone 6 Plus is impressive. It has a full HD resolution giving a pixel density of 401 ppi.
We were never disappointed by the cameras on Apple iPhones. No matter what the resolution is, their cameras are able to match the other flagship devices or at least give them a tough competition. This time they have gone for an 8 megapixel camera which might not sound like a lot, especially to people using devices like Xperia Z1 or Lumia 1020 but it is pretty good. they have used a large sensor so the pixel size goes up to 1.5µm. this allows for better image quality and good low light performance. It also helps reduce the noise as the camera can shoot at relatively lower ISOs. You get image stabilization on both the new iPhones. The iPhone 6 Plus has got optical image stabilization.
We saw the previous iPhone come with slow motion video recording feature. While the previous device allowed for a maximum of 120 fps video recording, this one can record 720p videos at up to 240 fps. This would allow you to shoot really nice slow motion videos with this camera. It also supports burst selfies which allows you to shoot multiple photos and choose the best one. You get the impressive dual tone flash that was first introduced with the iPhone 5S.
New way to buy
For the very first time on an iPhone, apple has added NFC or Near Field Communication support. This technology has been around for a while now and almost all mid-range and high end android and windows phone devices come with NFC support. This technology hasn’t crept into many devices which has limited its use. But now Apple is trying to change things and find better use of this technology. They are partnering with major banks and card companies. Then you can simply tap you device at your retailer to pay rather than tapping or swiping your card. In fact there are many banks which provide debit or credit cards with NFC features. This feature on the new iPhone would work in a somewhat similar way.
With the new iPhone will come in a new version of Apple’s mobile operating system. The iOS 8 brings in a lot of new features for the manufacturer. It would allow for even better integration of the device with other Apple devices. It also features better onscreen keyboards. For this they have introduced a new technology called Quick Type which attempts to guess the next word as the user types into the keyboard. It also supports third party keyboards, a feature which was added earlier to the iOS. We will also see widgets on this version of iOS. Healthcare features have taken a higher spot here as well so we will see the Health Kit app to keep track of your health data.
It is the thinnest iPhone
Remember the first couple of iPhones? They were small and fat. Then came in the iPhone 5 which brought in a taller design and slim profile. It was just 7.6 mm thick. This time they have further reduced the thickness of the device. The iPhone 6 is 6.9 mm thick and the bigger iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1 mm thick. This makes these two the slimmest yet. Obviously with the increase in display size, you can’t exactly call them small anymore.
Faster networking capabilities
Wi-Fi and cellular networks have come a long way in the past couple of years. The iPhones support 4G networks which is very obvious. The difference is that it supports a very wide band of frequencies which allows the device to be used in more countries on different networks. It also comes with a feature called carrier aggregation. It allows the device to make use of multiple frequency bands at the same time to allow for faster data transfer rates. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus get the latest Wi-Fi standard called 802.11ac. This would allow for faster data transfers on Wi-Fi networks. The device also adds the feature of automatically rerouting the phone calls from cellular network to Wi-Fi network in case of bad reception.
